SAN JOSE, Calif. – Aug.
05, 2009 – The South Bay Area Women Caucus for the Arts (SBAWCA) announced today that 2009 marks the 20th anniversary
of the non-profit organization, as well as its collaboration with the Guerilla Girls West for the “Control” exhibition.
Also they received an award from the County of Santa Clara Probation Department for working with girls held at the center.
To celebrate their 20th year, the organization is holding its “Purpose, Perspective and Passion” exhibit between
Aug. 29 and Sept. 19 at the Object Art Galley in San Jose.
“This is a tremendous achievement for the SBAWCA.
Celebrating 20 years is a statement of dedication on part of the community,” said Susan Kraft, president. ““We
are women at the nexus of science, engineering and visual arts. This is why our 20th anniversary show is so significant, and
it seeks to exemplify each artist’s personal journey, reflecting the past 20 years of life experience, defining us as
artists.”
The “Purpose, Perspective and Passion” show will take place between Aug. 29 and Sept. 19
at the Object Art Gallery located at 592 North Fifth Street, San Jose, Calif. The opening reception will be on Aug. 29, 6-9
pm at Object Art Gallery.
During the month of August, the SBAWCA held the “Control” exhibit at the SOMArts
Gallery in San Francisco. This show was juried by the Guerrilla Girls West, a branch of the well-known and reputed Guerrilla
Girls.
“Curating an exhibition of 79 California women artists, chosen from 171 women that submitted work, is
a testament to the power of women in the arts,” said Karen Gutfreund, SBAWCA board member and “Control”
curator. “Working with this group of exceptional women attests to the effort SBAWCA has been engaged in these past 20
years.”
In early July, the organization was honored by the Santa Clara County Probation Department for the volunteerism
of its members at the Wright Residential Center. SBAWCA members Dana Eaton and Alejandra Chaverri instituted an art workshop
for young women at the center, attesting to the organization’s commitment to the community.
