CALL for PAPERS/PROJECTS: "CyberIsms: Voice, Identity & Communication in the Virtual Realm"
(detail), SBAWCA's journal of art criticism, is calling for works on the theme of voice, identity, and communication in cyberspace. The territory of the virtual is vast and in fact unlimited. The ways we are able to communicate and present ourselves in this space are mutable and evolving. Topic examples include: net art, activism, access, email, chatrooms, discussion groups, representation, interactive web environments/games, MUD's, net etiquette, professional presentation... Forms may include: theory, practice, criticism, reviews, personal experience, and creative works. Contributors must be current members of WCA. Open to all chapters. Initial deadline is Sept 15, 2000. |

Dianne Erickson has an exhibit titled Small Work, a one-woman show of mixed media collage on paperand canvas, will be at the Norton Studio (upstairs) at the Pacific Art League of Palo Alto during the month of July.

Curated by Jan Rindfleisch as a continuing presentation of book arts in the Bay area, this exhibition focuses on a regional book group, The South Bay Bookies, which promotes artists' books and on several artists who have tied book arts into other art forms such as collage, drawing, and painting. Jone Small Manoogian will be instructing three, one-day workshops in which participants will receive instruction and materials with which to construct three different types of hand bound books. The workshops will take place at Cubberley Cultural Center Studio U-7, 4000 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Sunday, May 9, Sunday, May 16, and Sunday June 6, 1999.
May 9, Jone will present a traditional, hard cover, Japanese side binding technique. All materials will be furnished by the instructor with which to create a hand bound, blank journal or photo album with covers of decorative Asian papers and sewn with natural raffia twine or sinew. May 16, you will learn to make a Codex book with sewn signatures, featuring an exposed spine and tapes, with paper covered hard board covers, sewn with sinew or waxed linen thread. June 6, participants will construct a concertina fold artist's book based on photographs, poems, small sketches or paintings you furnish. Board covers will be finished with decorative Asian or hand made papers. No previous experience in hand made books is necessary and there is no extra materials fee. South Bay Bookies Meeting
The next meeting of the South Bay Bookies will be held on April 7, Wednesday at the studio U-7 of Barbara Clark at the Cubberley Art Studios, 4000 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto. The meeting will start at 7:00 and will be a mini work shop. Jone will instruct us on non-toxic heat and Citri-Solv transfers.
